Minister’s Message 1st December 2019

Are the disciples real…

…to you?

This week while reading the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark, I came to verse 30. Simon, later renamed Peter, became more real to me. It reads ‘Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, and as soon as Jesus arrived, he was told about her.’

I’ve read the scripture a number of times before and probably been more focused on the fact that Jesus heals Simon’s mother-in-law than anything else. But this time, through the words ‘mother-in-law’, suddenly this Biblical giant came into a new light. He was married, he had a mother-in-law, he had a home, and much more.

Because of those three words I reflected on how easy to think of the people in the Bible as less than real. But they did live, they did experience life, and the disciples that followed Jesus lived lives similar to mine. It was a comfort to think that Simon had responsibilities that he likely had to juggle while still following Jesus.

How much do you know about the disciples?

How real are they to you?

Google a verse on Simon / Peter and find out something new.
