Minister’s Message 4th March 2108

As I was driving in my car this week and a song came on the radio which was kind of catchy called ‘Meant to be’ by Bebe Rexha featuring Florida Georgia Line. The song is kind of a duet and the gist of the lyrics is the two telling each other not to be too worried about how their relationship is working. “If it’s meant to be, let it be” are the key lyrics repeated numerous times throughout the song.

It’s very catching and I couldn’t help but sing along,  however the more I did, the more the song bothered me. Is that really how relationships work? Pausing for a second and putting aside the romantic element of the song, consider the “If it’s meant to be” mentality with your friends or family.

Where would it leave your relationships? If they are meant to be, they will be? In my experience staying friends and being family takes intentional work. It takes time, commitment, patience, kindness, listening, planning… the list goes on.

Now I’m not saying that we should over think things in relationships, which I hope is what the song ‘Meant to be’ is maybe trying to get at. What I am saying is, that if you want a relationship to work you have to… work at it.

So here’s a challenge for you!

Is there a relationship which you need to put some work into?

A family member, a friend, your spouse?

Don’t let it be, or it might not be.
